Knowing that I’m doing something good for my health and for the planet 3 times a day makes me so happy, plus everything tastes delicious!

I haven’t eaten meat or dairy for over4 years and I feel so happy and healthy! It did require a bit of research at the beginning to make sure I was getting all the nutrients I needed but now it’s easy. I know what to buy, how to cook it, I have my repertoire of favourite recipes and I also get constant inspiration for new ideas, mainly from Hot For Food.

It’s pretty easy to find plant-based replacements for meat and dairy in the supermarkets nowadays. While these are fine every now and again, I think it’s always better to go for natural options rather that processed meat and diary replacements. I eat a lot of pulses like lentils, chickpeas and beans which are all great sources of protein. I also eat lots of seeds and nuts like cashews, almonds, walnuts and sesame, chia and pumpkin seeds which contain important fatty acids and Omega 3. I also try to include leafy greens into my meals as they are high in minerals like calcium and iron. My favourite discovery since changing my diet has been nutritional yeast (+B12) which adds a yummy cheese flavour to my pasta dishes!

Whatever your diet may consist of, choosing fresh ingredients is the most important. Everyone is free to eat as they choose but I do think it’s important to know where your food comes from. The change in my diet was thanks to watching a number of documentaries including Cowspiracy, Forks Over Knives and Earthlings which sparked my interest and lead me to do a lot of my own research. I couldn’t be happier with my decision to cut out meat and dairy and I know I’ll never look back!
